The Kwara State House of Assembly is the legislative body responsible for making laws, shaping policies, and overseeing the governance of Kwara State, Nigeria. Established to represent the interests of the people, the Kwara State House of Assembly operates within the framework of the Nigerian Constitution, ensuring that the principles of democracy, justice, and the rule of law are upheld.
The Assembly plays a pivotal role in the state’s political system by enacting legislation that addresses local needs, scrutinizing the actions and expenditures of the executive branch, and providing a platform for debate on issues affecting the state.
The Kwara State House of Assembly consists of 24 members elected from the state’s 16 local government areas. Areas with larger populations are divided into two constituencies to ensure equal representation, resulting in a total of 24 legislators.
Members are elected for four-year terms, concurrent with federal legislators (Senate and House of Representatives). The Assembly meets three times a week (Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays) at the assembly complex located at the Asa Dam area of the state capital, Ilorin.
There have been Ten different houses of assembly, the first one was inaugurated 2 October 1979 and the present one was inaugurated 13 June 2023.
